Well, after a few days off I was able to make a lot of progress today! And I'm pretty happy so far with the results! Phew...
First an update on the base coats of white. I had some 1000 grit sandpaper I picked up recently and decided to give it a try on the orange peel issues I've been having. That fine grit paper opened up a whole new world to me! I discovered what many others have been talking about and it works. Here's what I've settled on...
1. Sand the orange peel with 400 wet/dry just until flat.
2. Then work your way through 600 grit, 1000 grit, 1500 grit and finally 2500 grit paper. In the end you'll have a hull that is smooth as glass. No, it's not as glossy as it was when sprayed on, but the finish is so much smoother that it's worth it. Now I'm exploring if a spray lacquer over the top will work or not. I've got an email into Klass Kote paints to see if I can use Testors Gloss Spray Lacquer over Klass Kote's epoxy paints. We'll see. But even if I can't I'm happy with the low luster but super smooth finish!
Today: I Masked the boat in the pattern I wanted.
And then... gulp... sprayed on three coats of Klass Kote deep red. And deep red it is! Beautiful paint. Didn't have to reduce it as much as the white either. Photo below is after the first coat. Did three total... pretty heavy too.
I'm going to let that cure really well for several days and then sand it with down to flat too. The few little goofs should disappear.
Removed the masking tape and .... TA DA!
I'm super happy with how it turned out. Pictures below of the wet boat right after I removed the masking tape. More pictures next week when I sand it down and polish it up.
Let me know what you think!
Fair seas!!
